El documental de temática o producción mexicana se posiciona entre las preferencias del público de la Gira de Documentales. Temas tan diversos como la vida de Chavela Vargas, la violencia y el narcotráfico, la feria de pirotecnia de Tultepec, Ayotzinapa, la lucha libre, la migración, o la resistencia de las comunidades ante la incursión de transnacionales eólicas en la costa oaxaqueña suscitaron mucho interés en la audiencia. El promedio de asistencia por función de los documentales de temática nacional fue de 91 personas, frente a los 47 espectadores promedio de títulos internacionales.
De todas las películas del programa, los documentales más vistos fueron La cazadora de águilas, Chavela, La libertad del diablo, Pólvora y gloria, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week, No soy tu negro, Ovarian Psycos, el programa Historias secretas de Ambulantito, Guerrero y Artemio. Otros títulos que destacaron por su alta asistencia media por función son Lucha México, La Chana, Al otro lado del muro, Gente de mar y viento, y Batallas íntimas.
La asistencia total de la Gira fue de 78,504 espectadores. Tras Ciudad de México, los estados de mayor audiencia fueron Veracruz, Oaxaca, Puebla y Jalisco. En total se realizaron 1,355 actividades en 170 sedes de 38 municipios, 15 clases magistrales, 14 talleres, 12 charlas con especialistas y 94 funciones al aire libre. Además, las actividades específicas en torno al tema de la justicia incluyeron 11 mesas de diálogo, 4 funciones de cine en vivo, 3 foros, 3 obras de teatro, 2 docudramas y un taller. Estos espacios permitieron revisar el sistema de justicia penal mexicano a través del cine de lo real.
El 52% de las actividades fueron gratuitas. Más de 120 invitados nos acompañaron para presentar su trabajo, y 211 voluntarios hicieron posible el festival en los diez estados recorridos.
La recién estrenada página web registró 123,560 visitas y los seguidores en redes sociales rebasaron los 470 mil . Más de 720 medios cubrieron la Gira y el valor de la pauta en medios y Cinépolis superó los 159 millones de pesos.

Los documentales de la cuarta generación de Ambulante Más Allá, el proyecto de capacitación de Ambulante, formaron parte de la programación de la Gira 2017. Estos títulos fueron programados en las diferentes sedes de acuerdo a las problemáticas de la región. Tras las proyecciones se abrió un espacio de diálogo donde los jóvenes realizadores y el público pudieron platicar sobre las realidades retratadas, entre ellas asuntos relacionados con cuestiones de género, justicia, defensa de la tierra, y tradición e identidad. En total se programaron 64 funciones que reunieron a 3,844 espectadores.
Por otro lado, los estudiantes de la quinta generación de Ambulante Más Allá están trabajando en el desarrollo e investigación de las historias de sus documentales, los cuales se rodarán en agosto y septiembre de 2017. Los 16 becarios, 6 mujeres y 10 hombres de entre 19 y 30 años, provienen de municipios ubicados en los estados de Guerrero y Oaxaca. Para la realización de las películas recibirán asesoría y comentarios de más de veinte cineastas y artistas. La presentación de sus proyectos tendrá lugar en 2018.

Las fechas de recepción de material para ser considerado en la edición de 2018 se dividirán de la siguiente forma:
