Hoy en día nuestra sociedad depende de un suministro continuo de energía eléctrica, si éste se ve interrumpido por un largo periodo producirá pérdidas considerables tanto a las compañías que suministran la electricidad como a todas aquellas que la consumen.
La falla de arco es un cortocircuito que sucede entre conductores eléctricos, puede ser entre dos conductores vivos o entre uno vivo y a tierra; ésta ocurre a través de aire ionizado y se caracteriza por una explosión eléctrica debido a la velocidad, potencia, calor y presión del fenómeno.
Los principales efectos del arco eléctrico son:

Para ello, entre más rápido sea el tiempo de respuesta del sistema de protección, menor será el daño que produzca la falla de arco, la reparación será más rápida y el periodo sin suministro de energía eléctrica será menor.

Podemos decir que la falla de arco representa uno de los peores riesgos en un sistema de potencia y debido a que la protección contra sobrecorriente es incapaz de evitar sus efectos, es necesario utilizar otro tipo de protección. Esa protección se llama VAMP, un sistema simple y eficiente que protege las barras de media tensión, lugar donde puede originarse el arco eléctrico. Con esta tecnología, Schneider Electric es pionera en la protección contra arco eléctrico, contando con cerca de 15,000 sistemas funcionando y 300,000 sensores ópticos en servicio.
