Hoy en día nuestra sociedad depende de un suministro continuo de energía eléctrica, si éste se ve interrumpido por un largo periodo producirá pérdidas considerables tanto a las compañías que suministran la electricidad como a todas aquellas que la consumen.
La falla de arco es un cortocircuito que sucede entre conductores eléctricos, puede ser entre dos conductores vivos o entre uno vivo y a tierra; ésta ocurre a través de aire ionizado y se caracteriza por una explosión eléctrica debido a la velocidad, potencia, calor y presión del fenómeno.
Los principales efectos del arco eléctrico son:
Luz intensa con radiación cegadora y quemante.
Temperaturas de hasta 23,000° F.
Voltaje altamente peligroso para los operadores.
Generación de aire caliente y vaporización de los componentes de cobre, lo que ocasiona un exceso de presión en el equipo, sonido potente y por ende explosiones acompañadas de gases tóxicos.
La expulsión de material incandescente puede provocar quemaduras graves dependiendo de la protección con la que el operador cuente, así como de la distancia, voltaje corriente y duración del fenómeno. Todo ello sin mencionar la generación de incendios y daños severos a los equipos y objetos aledaños. Las afecciones para una empresa ante pérdidas humanas y de inmobiliario pueden llegar a ser tan grandes que la recuperación podría tomar años. En el caso de las plantas, por ejemplo, los daños que un incendio puede provocar en las áreas de producto terminado y bodegas tienen consecuencias monetarias severas, considerando los retrasos en fabricación y con clientes. Podemos decir que la falla de arco representa uno de los peores riesgos en un sistema de potencia y debido a que la protección contra sobrecorriente es incapaz de evitar sus efectos, es necesario utilizar otro tipo de protección. Adicionalmente, VAMP es una solución muy rentable ya que puede ser instalada en equipos existentes por lo que no es necesario cambiar el equipo para incrementar la seguridad de los mismos. Con esta tecnología, Schneider Electric es pionera en la protección contra arco eléctrico, contando con cerca de 15,000 sistemas funcionando y 300,000 sensores ópticos en servicio.
