Hoy en día nuestra sociedad depende de un suministro continuo de energía eléctrica, si éste se ve interrumpido por un largo periodo producirá pérdidas considerables tanto a las compañías que suministran la electricidad como a todas aquellas que la consumen.
La falla de arco es un cortocircuito que sucede entre conductores eléctricos, puede ser entre dos conductores vivos o entre uno vivo y a tierra; ésta ocurre a través de aire ionizado y se caracteriza por una explosión eléctrica debido a la velocidad, potencia, calor y presión del fenómeno.
Los principales efectos del arco eléctrico son:
Luz intensa con radiación cegadora y quemante.

Voltaje altamente peligroso para los operadores.
Generación de aire caliente y vaporización de los componentes de cobre, lo que ocasiona un exceso de presión en el equipo, sonido potente y por ende explosiones acompañadas de gases tóxicos.

La realidad ante estos sucesos nos muestra que la ausencia de un sistema de protección no implica un ahorro sino todo lo contrario.
Entonces, el objetivo primordial de una protección contra falla de arco es brindar máxima seguridad al personal, así como reducir el daño de las instalaciones al mínimo. Para ello, entre más rápido sea el tiempo de respuesta del sistema de protección, menor será el daño que produzca la falla de arco, la reparación será más rápida y el periodo sin suministro de energía eléctrica será menor.
Una solución rentable
Podemos decir que la falla de arco representa uno de los peores riesgos en un sistema de potencia y debido a que la protección contra sobrecorriente es incapaz de evitar sus efectos, es necesario utilizar otro tipo de protección. Esa protección se llama VAMP, un sistema simple y eficiente que protege las barras de media tensión, lugar donde puede originarse el arco eléctrico. Además, es aplicable en equipos de media y baja tensión.
Esta tecnología de detección de arco eléctrico reduce significativamente el tiempo que le toma al relevador abrir el interruptor en respuesta a la falla, por ende, se reduce el riesgo y peligro de este fenómeno. Para que lo anterior suceda, VAMP cuenta con sensores ópticos, que a diferencia de la tecnología tradicional que mide la corriente eléctrica, estos miden la luz. De esta forma se puede detectar la falla con mayor rapidez y brindar una respuesta al problema en menor tiempo.
Adicionalmente, VAMP es una solución muy rentable ya que puede ser instalada en equipos existentes por lo que no es necesario cambiar el equipo para incrementar la seguridad de los mismos. Con esta tecnología, Schneider Electric es pionera en la protección contra arco eléctrico, contando con cerca de 15,000 sistemas funcionando y 300,000 sensores ópticos en servicio.
