Durante el XI Encuentro Latinoamericano de Empresas Socialmente Responsables, los líderes mexicanos de la industria alimentaria – Alsea, Grupo Bimbo, Arcos Dorados y Grupo Toks– participaron en el panel “La Industria Alimentaria y el Bienestar Animal”, donde dialogaron sobre la importancia del bienestar animal en sus cadenas de suministro y cómo están implementando dichos compromisos para abasto exclusivo de huevo o cerdo libres de jaula.
El panel fue moderado por Humane Society International (HSI), una organización global líder en protección animal, que trabaja con estos y otros líderes de la industria alimentaria a nivel mundial en la adopción e implementación de políticas que procuren el bienestar de los animales.
Sabina García, gerente de Programas y Políticas Corporativas del Departamento de Animales de Producción de HSI México, declaró: “Celebramos a Bimbo, Alsea, Arcos Dorados y Toks por su compromiso con el bienestar animal, abasto responsable y por su progreso en estos temas. Está creciendo entre los consumidores e inversionistas la preocupación por el bienestar animal y las prácticas de los corporativos en sus cadenas de suministro, especialmente respecto al confinamiento de por vida de las gallinas ponedoras y las cerdas gestantes en jaulas. El mundo se está alejando de estas prácticas y esperamos que las experiencias compartidas durante el panel motiven a otras empresas a hacer lo mismo».
Gabriela Tiburcio, directora de Calidad y Nuevos Productos de Alsea, declaró en su presentación: “Una de las formas de ganar como empresa es la sustentabilidad. Como resultado de esto se formaron comisiones de consumo responsable para asegurar que los insumos son seguros y cumplen la calidad que los consumidores esperan. Actualizamos nuestro Vendor Agreement, en el que se incluye inocuidad, medio ambiente bioética y bienestar animal, y que esperamos nuestros proveedores cumplan».
Por su parte, Gustavo Pérez, director de Responsabilidad Social de Grupo Toks resaltó que “como consumidor, si tú prefieres el huevo de gallina libre, si investigas las marcas, si comunicas tus preferencias, tienes la fuerza para marcar la diferencia y cambiar la tendencia de consumo. En Toks estudiamos el tema, visitamos y hablamos con proveedores, empezamos en pequeño y ya tenemos una prueba piloto de huevo de gallina libre de jaula en Oaxaca».
Emilio Aguilar, director de Vinculación Empresarial de Grupo Bimbo comentó: “No visualizo en 10 años un escenario en donde una empresa no esté comprometida con el bienestar animal, la misma inercia y exigencias del consumidor los van a hacer migrar. Las grandes empresas tenemos que servir de ejemplo a las demás para tener un impacto positivo…»
En México, la mayoría de las gallinas ponedoras son confinadas durante toda su vida en pequeñas jaulas en batería hechas de malla de metal, donde apenas pueden moverse o estirar sus alas. A las cerdas reproductoras en México también se les confina frecuentemente durante toda su vida en jaulas de gestación, que son jaulas individuales un poco más grandes que el cuerpo de los animales, en donde no pueden ni siquiera darse la vuelta o dar más que unos pasos hacia adelante o hacia atrás.
