Direct Relief México se constituyó como asociación civil en 2014, con el apoyo de compañías como FedEx, Baxter y AbbVie. Al año siguiente recibió estatus de Donataria Autorizada por el gobierno mexicano, que permite a las compañías en México recibir beneficios impositivos por donaciones a la asociación.
«En el modelo de asistencia tradicional, los países en desarrollo reciben apoyo del exterior», declaró Eduardo Mendoza, Gerente de Direct Relief México. «Este enfoque permite incrementar los recursos existentes en México y crea un mecanismo de suministro de medicamentos genuinos aprobados para su uso en México, en beneficio de pacientes mexicanos de bajos ingresos que no tienen otra forma de obtener los medicamentos que necesitan».
En el marco de este enfoque de asistencia, Direct Relief ha donado a México más de 35 millones de dólares en medicamentos desde 2014. Sin embargo, debido a la falta de un canal de distribución a gran escala de medicamentos fabricados en México, solo podía distribuir productos farmacéuticos desde Estados Unidos, a través de costosos embarques internacionales. Hasta ahora para las farmacéuticas locales y globales que operan en México no existía un mecanismo recurrente de distribución éste.
