El cómputo en la nube (cloud computing) sigue cobrando relevancia entre las empresas que están avanzando hacia su transformación digital. De acuerdo con el estudio de IDC titulado Perspectiva de Open Source y Servicios en América Latina, el 54% de las compañías utiliza actualmente soluciones de nube pública o privada, en tanto que el 31% planea aprovecharlas en los próximos doce meses. Sólo el 8% no tiene planes de utilizar soluciones cloud, o no están interesadas.
Y esta misma tendencia se observa en escala mundial, particularmente en lo que se refiere al aprovechamiento de OpenStack, una iniciativa donde colabora un gran número de desarrolladores y expertos en cómputo cloud para impulsar el crecimiento y la evolución de las nubes públicas y privadas.
Cabe mencionar que OpenStack recibe contribuciones de empresas como Red Hat, Google, OpenStack Foundation y la NASA, entre otras más que suman alrededor de 200. En 2016, TechValidate, por encargo de Red Hat, entrevistó a 150 profesionales y tomadores de decisiones TI de todo el mundo para conocer el avance de la adopción de OpenStack en las organizaciones. Asimismo, el estudio revela un crecimiento importante en los casos de uso: el 66% de los participantes utiliza, o planea utilizar, el esquema de plataforma como servicio (PaaS) en sus proyectos de OpenStack. Esto contrasta con el porcentaje del año anterior, cuando sólo el 54% dijo que estaba considerando usar PaaS y OpenStack juntos, lo que evidencia un mayor interés en estas tecnologías complementarias.
A esta ecuación se suma la creciente adopción de contenedores Linux. Y es que a medida que surgen aplicaciones creadas dentro de éstos como un nuevo tipo de carga de trabajo, OpenStack se convierte en el principal entorno de desarrollo: el 57% de los encuestados aseguró que está usando, o planea usar contenedores en ese entorno.
Si bien OpenStack incluye herramientas para gestionar el despliegue de nubes privadas o híbridas, y evitar así la degradación del desempeño de las cargas de trabajo y de los recursos asociados, la encuesta muestra que los responsables de los proyectos cloud están optando por tecnologías de administración de terceros. El uso de las herramientas que integra OpenStack varió muy poco respecto al año pasado (54% versus 51% de 2015), y se han sumado distintas herramientas y tecnologías como:
Control de configuraciones de código abierto (usado por el 41%).
Plataformas de gestión en la nube (39%).
Herramientas de monitoreo y alerta (47%).
Por otro lado, para los participantes del estudio de TechValidate, la portabilidad es primordial, pues la mayoría planea ejecutar cargas de trabajo de OpenStack en una variedad de entornos: el 67% la calificó como una característica importante o muy importante del OpenStack comercial. Asimismo, el estudio señala que cuando se opta por OpenStack comercial, los usuarios le dan gran relevancia al soporte, el liderazgo en código abierto y las certificaciones. Así, según el estudio, el 73% considera al soporte técnico de las ofertas comerciales importante o lo más importante, en tanto que el 80% le da cierto valor al liderazgo en las comunidades abiertas. Finalmente, el 66% destaca la importancia de las certificaciones del hardware y el software.
La perspectiva que brinda este estudio permite vislumbrar un futuro optimista para OpenStack en los entornos empresariales. Si bien hay necesidades que aún deben satisfacerse, como la gestión unificada, y fortalecer el soporte para los contenedores Linux, en general OpenStack ha superado la fase de prueba de concepto y está lista para soportar las operaciones de misión crítica.
