México ha adquirido compromisos muy claros y ambiciosos en el Acuerdo de París, ya que busca comenzar la reducción absoluta en el consumo de combustibles fósiles para el 2026. Para lograrlo, algunas empresas llevan tiempo trabajando de manera sustentable, pero aún queda mucho trabajo por hacer, en especial cuando ya existen disposiciones legales en la hacen obligatoria, comenzando con las compañías que acumulan más de un millón de toneladas anuales de bióxido de carbono equivalente (CO2e) y a partir de 2018 se integran las que emiten más de 25 mil toneladas.
Mayor CO2 significa mayor costo y no solo aplica para la empresa que emite en su fábrica grandes cantidades de gases efecto invernadero, sino a lo largo de su cadena de valor, por lo que necesita implementar soluciones sustentables en cada eslabón para mitigar sus efectos.
Según datos del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI), México cuenta con más de cinco millones de unidades económicas registradas, las cuales sin importar su tamaño o giro deben alinearse en temas de sustentabilidad, ya que es un atributo clave a adoptar de forma inmediata en sus procesos, colaboración y toma de decisiones. Esto fomentará su desarrollo y fortalecerá su compromiso con la comunidad donde se desenvuelven.
Dados los múltiples y convincentes beneficios de pensar, ser y actuar sustentable, resulta tentador saltar directamente al diseño de la cadena de suministro verde. Sin embargo, el éxito a largo plazo depende primero de sentar las bases adecuadas en cada eslabón que la conforma.
En este rubro, el estudio “Desarrollo Sostenible en México 2018” de KPMG, destaca que contar con áreas y personal orientados al desarrollo sostenible significa que la compañía cuenta con una metodología, herramientas y buenas prácticas para comprender los temas involucrados y convertirlos en beneficios económicos. Hace una década, los esfuerzos de sostenibilidad a menudo se despriorizaban a favor de consideraciones de supervivencia corporativa. Hoy, las empresas mexicanas deben evaluar las iniciativas sustentables y de mejora ambiental, con la presunción de hacer que sus operaciones sean más ecológicas para el cumplimento regulatorio y alcanzar eficiencias económicas.
